Celebrex

Many of us have arthritic type aches and pains that nothing seems to help. There are really some relatively new drugs that are being used that help many people with these aches and pains. The main one we have all heard advertised on commercials is Celebrex but there are others also such as Vioxx and an up and coming one is Bextra. They all act primarily in the same manner. These are Non steroid anti-inflammatory agents. They essentially block the effects of Cox-2. This is an enzyme that the body produces and plays an important role in the regulation of pain and inflammation.

Although they do have this great anti inflammatory action, they also have some potentially harmful and uncomfortable side effects such as the possibility of causing stomach cramps, burning, gas, and ulcers. Still taking either 200 mg or 400 mg of Celebrex a day can have the same effect of a larger dose of Naprosyn ( many people now take) without as many of these GI effects. While yet another advantage is that it does not cause thinning of the blood or interfere with platelets as other NSAIDS such as aspirin do. Celebrex is broken down in the liver.

An interesting fact though the importance is not really understood at this time is African Americans absorb 40% more of the Celebrex than caucasians. Also people with kidney problems have less absorption of the Celebrex.

Caution must be used. as NSAIDS can cause abdominal discomfort and GI Bleeding at any time during the therapy And people with Sulfa or Aspirin allergies should not take Celebrex. Though they may take the Vioxx.
