Reiki Reiki is an ancient and simple system of "laying on of hands" healing derived from Tibetan Buddhism. Rei means universal and Ki means universal life energy like the Chinese chi. Some people believe that this was the method of healing of Jesus. All reiki therapies have the central concept that life energy pervades each person and that this energy is unconditional, divine, loving, and healing. Illness is believed to have derived when the energy can't flow properly through the body usually due to a blocked chakra. these are areas believed to be where life energy is converted from one form to another and ultimately into physical matter. The Reiki master is a channel, allowing the Reiki energy to flow through him or her, directing it toward the patient. There are three levels of Reiki practitioners and the healing sessions themselves look much like therapeutic touch. The hands are open flat and kept in one place palms down on or above the patient's body. The hands are kept in one place and the practioners attune themselves to the life energy. They are taught not to direct the energy but let it flow through them. The energy flow will cause sensations of hot, cold, tingling, colour or pain and when these subside, usually after five minutes or so, the practitioner moves to another area. A complete healing session can take over an hour.

Shaitsu means "Finger Pressure" It is believed to have originally been developed as a way to detect and treat problems in the flow of life energy. In Japanese this energy is called ki and is believed to be stored in the abdomen, with different regions connected to internal organs by meridians. Practitioners gently press on various parts of the abdomen to determine if there are any energy problems. Treatment is carried out to restore a balanced flow of ki by applying pressure at various acupoints using the practitioners fingers, thumbs, elbows, knees or feet. In Japan Shiatsu has been used as a means of relieving everyday illnesses such as headaches, back pain, constipation, and diarrhea. Most commonly it is used to cleanse the body, relieve tension, and promote relaxation.
Donal O'Mathuna & Walt Larimore MD."Alternative Medicine the Christian Handbook" Therapeutic touch Therapeutic touch is a method that has gained popularity and acceptance amongst nurses. Tens of thousands of health care professionals have been trained in the practice. It is said to be based on a number of ancient healing practices including some practitioners actually doing the biblical laying on of hands. Therapeutic touch practioners work to sense the nonphysical energies through a form of meditation called centering. They gain access to their inner spirits from which they receive guidance for their healing session Patients are asked to sit or lie comfortably, the practitioners then pass their hands over the patient. The hands are usually kept two to four inches away from the skin. After passing their hands over their patients energy field for imbalances and disturbances believed to be the precursors of illness. These are corrected in one of two ways. One is by Unruffling a procedure in which the practitioner uses long sweeps or passes of the hands over the body. These are believed to smooth out the energy field. The other method is to direct energy to specific points of the body. This is done by visualizing coolness in their minds . If they sense the field is cold they will visualize hottness and so on. During these techniques the patients energy field is reassessed at the end of a therapeutic session. Then the patient is encouraged to relax for twenty-thirty minutes The most common uses of therapeutic touch are relaxation, to relieve pain, promote healing and boost the he immune system.
