HOME REMEDIES

Throughout the years we have all been told about different things that our great grandparents, grandparents and other family members have found helped solved some problem of theirs ie. there are so many different home remedies for hiccoughs that it is hard to imagine.  One person will tell you take a teaspoon of sugar, another breath into a paper bag, another will say drink a glass of water from the bottom edge etc etc.  Funny though how many of our old home remedies do work for simple things.

I do believe though that there are some things that just cannot be cured with home remedies, while  others may be helped we still need to see a physician if symptoms persist and of course if the symptoms are quite serious to begin with. Such as chest pain, difficulty breathing, bleeding etc. And we must be very careful and find out about the different herbs before we try them.

Herbalism is the oldest form of medicine to mankind. People from every culture have added to the many herbs and things to use them for. A Herb is a green plant without a woody stem.  In medicine it is any plant and any part of the plant that can be used to make a remedy.  this can be seaweeds, ferns, flowers Etc.  Herbal medicines occupies the middle road between drugs and food.

At one end of the spectrum are the strong remedies that have been used as sources for our modern drugs, such as poppies (Opium) and nightshade (atropine), while at the other end are nourishing remedies such as a bladder wrack and horsetail which are high in vitamins and essential trace elements.

The herbs are chosen to work with the healing powers of the body.  for instance:

  • elderflower will bring down the temperature.

  • recurrent infections can be treated with herbs like echinacea that stimulate the immune system

  • Hawthorn strengthens the heart

  • Dandelions strengthen the liver
