HAM RADIO

Welcome to theWhisper's (WD5GPH) Ham Page

Amateur Radio is so much fun, and a really useful hobby.  Mind you I have to be the quietest Ham around, but still I LOVE it!  I may not say much but I really do listen a lot.  My call sign (identification) issued to me by the FCC (Federal Communications Commission) is WD5GPH.  I have had this call sign for 26 years now!

There is so much  that can be done with Ham Radio.  We are often the people you see with Walkie Talkies (Handy Talkies) on the street corners and at the checkpoints with various marathons.  If you live on the Gulf you will probably have seen us at the regattas. And will be found at most Special Olympics.

Amateur Radio is also used to give aide and assistance in times of disaster, both natural and manmade.  Ham Radio has always played a big part in different emergencies and disasters  such as, lost people, train wrecks and hurricanes, earthquakes and such .  I recall one time when we ran communications for the base hospital for approximately 36 hours.  A work crew had broke the phone lines to the hospital.

One service in which the amateur radio operators take part in that works many of these disasters is the Military Affiliated Radio Service                  ( M.A.R.S), this is one service that many of you may recognize.  This is not only for disasters and emergencies but they also run the hello Mom how are you, humanitarian communications when families are separated by the military There are many other organizations to help others such as REACT and ARES.

                                                                                                            .

New Hams do not have to struggle as much as we old timers did to get your license.  there is now a no-code license which will allow you to get on the air and have fun while learning the rest to upgrade to a higher class license.  There are many people and volunteer examiners to help you along the way to this fascinating hobby!  Just think you could be listening to someone who resided North of the magnetic North Pole as I did.  It does take learning the basics of electricity and communications but there too there are many people more than willing to tell you all they know to help you pass the written exam. Camaraderie and friendship are very strong in our little family of Ham Radio Operators.

This has only been a little very brief rundown of some of the things I have loved about Ham Radio without getting too technical.  Below are some links that  will help you find more information if you are interested.  If so I say three cheers and welcome to the crowd!

For those with extra interest and wanting to get away and have a fun weekend where you can learn more about this great hobby.......Dayton Ohio has the biggest Ham Convention going on Usually in May.  You do not have to be a ham to attend but I bet most who do attend become one if not already one  this would be a great place to go and see what is offered and available and seminars on learning more about different aspects of the hobby!!! Visit the above web page for ARRL for more information!

In June of each year is our Field day so keep an ear out for when the activities take place in your area.  This is a great time for all to experience what ham radio is all about and is usually held at a campground or park in the area and sponsored by the local clubs.
