Acrylic Cookbook Stand

Basic Work techniques for making small useful and great looking things from bending and cutting Acrylic plastic similar to Plexiglas. This will take a bit to get started but once the first part is done you will be able to do many more projects with the same equipment.

What will be needed to get started on the strip heater to use for bending the acrylic:

  • A ¾  inch diameter 12 “ long steel bar

  • Hand or electric drill with 1/8 in bit

  • ½ “ plywood, (5”X12”)

  • Aluminum U shape channel section ½ in wide, 1 in high, and 12 in long

  • Ten 1 in nails

  • Set Square

  • Three 1/8 in no. 4 screws

  • Two pieces of wood 12 inches long 1”X2”

  • Pencil, hammer and screwdriver

  • To Assemble:

  • First attach the aluminum channel to the plywood to make a support for the bar.

  • Drill three holes evenly spaced along the aluminum channel and drill three corresponding holes along the center of the plywood base to accommodate the screws.

  • Position the Aluminum channel and screw in place.

  • To make the rests for the acrylic sheet while it is being heated, nail the two pieces of wood either side of the aluminum support ½ in away from it.

  • (When a piece of acrylic is placed on the rests there should be a gap of ¼ “ between the bar and the underside of the acrylic sheet to prevent the acrylic touching the bar during heating)

  • Using a set square draw a line across the top of the two wooden rests at one end and at right angles to the steel bar.

  • Half sink 4 nails along this line.

  • If the acrylic sheet is butted up against these nails during heating, this will ensure the bedn will be at right angles to the edge of the acrylic.

    Cookbook Stand

This cookbook stand will protect your cookbooks from grease and food stains while making it easier to follow the directions wile you are cooking.  It is made by cutting a rectangle of acrylic sheet and making three bends across the width of the rectangle of the sheet and making three bends across the width of the rectangle  two of the 90 degrees the other one 30 degrees.  The stand is 9 1/4 in high.

    You will need:

  • Strip heater

  • Burner on gas stove or small gas torch for heating bar

  • carpenters square

  • pliers

  • transparent acrylic sheet 11" X24 1/2" X 1/4 In

  • hacksaw and vice

  • Fine silicone paper

  • metal polish such as Brasso

  • cloth for polishing

  • G-clamp

  • china pencil

  • two pieces of wood to protect the acrylic from pressure while in the vice.

  • asbedstos gloves.

  • Leaving the paper protection on the acrylic sheet, cut the rectangle and polish the edges

  • Peel off the protective coating

  • Bending:

The acrylic is now ready to be heated and bent into the required shape.  To obtain the two bends of 90 degrees the heated acrylic will be held against a carpenters square in a vice   The bend of 30 degrees is judged by the eye and the anlge can vary as long as the book stand will actually stand up.

  • Using a china marker lightly mark out the positions for the three bends on the surface of the acrylic.

  • Secure carpenters square in vice

  • remove steel bar from the strip heater

  • put on asbestos gloves and hold steel bar with pliers over a torch until it is nearly red hot (about 10 minutes) Try to heat the bar evenly by running it back and forth along the flame. If the bar is heated unevenly the bend will also be uneven.

  • it is a good idea to overheat the bar and let it cool down so it will even out

  • replace the bar in the strip heater on the aluminum support.

  • place the acrylic sheet on the strip heater so that the line for the first bend is exactly over the steel bar.

  • Butt the edge of the acrylic against the nails to ensure the bend will be straight. If the surface on the acrylic starts to blister, this means the bar is too hot.

  • Once the acrylic is soft ( after about one minute) remove from the strip heater and holding the sheet on either side of the heated line, start to bend the acrylic.

  • Hold the acrylic against the carpenters square to to make a bend of 90 deg.

  • After a few minutes dip the acrylic in cold water or hold under a running faucet to cool and harden the bend.

  • position the acrylic over the bar for the second bend.

  • when the acrylic is hot enough remove the the strip heater and bend against the carpenters square to obtain another angle of 90 deg.

  • You must now make the third bend that will prop up the book stand.  This must be at a bend of about 30 degrees.

  • heat the bar and bend the acrylic on the line as before.  Hold the acrylic agains the carpenters square to obtain an angle of 90 degrees and then bend further until the angle is about 30 degrees.  Cool and harden as before and the recipe stand is complete.

  • Egg Rack

The second project is the Egg stand. this involves cutting out a rectangle of acrylic, drilling eight holes to take eggs, and then bending along two lines to make legs for the rack.

    You will need:

  • 14X5X3/8 in acrylic

  • all the equipment listed for the cookbook

  • pliers

  • steel rule

  • Electric drill and 1  1/2 inch diameter hole cutter

  • Decker

  • wood file

  • dowel 1" in diameter about 4 in long

  • 2 pieces of 1/2 inch plywood one = 8X3 inches the other 10 X 7 in

  •

     Directions:

  • prepare the acrylic as for the cookbook, leaving the adhesive paper in place

  • using pencil and paper mark out the positions of the center of each hole on the protective paper

  • place acrylic in vice with a wood piece on each side to protect the acrylic from pressure, ensuring that there is wood behind the hole to be drilled for support and to prevent splintering.

  • Cutting the holes: An electric drill is essential for this

  • Fix hole cutter on electric drill

  • The center of the cutter is is a 14 in drill which is the first thing to come into contact with the acrylic. Guide the point of the drill on to the position marked for the center of the hole

  • Gently bring the rotating cutter into contact with the surface of the acrylic making sure that it is touching on all sides at once.

  • Friction of the cutting tool against the acrylic will generate heat, and may damage the acrylic by melting it if you are not careful. To avoid this happening occasionally draw back the tool so that it can cool in the air.

Drill each hole in the same way.

    FINISHING:

The inside of the drill holes must be smoothed and polished.

  • Leaving the acrylic in the vice and using the steel rule scrape off any scratches or surface blisters caused by the cutter.  To do this insert the ruler through one of the holes, and holding the ruler in both hands on either side of the sheet scrape away the inside surface. It will be necessary to move the acrylic around in the vice to get at all the holes

  • When all the scratches and blisters have been removed, wrap a fine silicon carbide paper round the piece of dowel, put a few drops of water on it and sand down the edges on each hole'

  • Polish the insides of the holes with metal polish on a rag wrapped round the piece of dowel'

  • Smooth and polish the edges of the acrylic as for the book stand.

  • Bending the legs:

  • The bend lines are 2 1/2 inches from each end. As the acrylic is thicker for the egg rack it will take longer to heat the acrylic for bending (about 2 minutes)

  • Mark out the lines for the two ends with the china marker

  • Bend each end to an angle of 90 degrees using a strip heater and carpenters square as you did with the book stand.

  • This really is fun if you get through the making of the strip heater and does not take a long time after that.  Enjoy !!
